“Fantasy” by Venus In Arms -
“Fantasy” by Venus In Arms is a haunting piece of music. With the atmosphere of a Weyes Blood or Mitski song and the drive of a 1980s soft rock track, this song is both nostalgic and relevant. Strings, steady bass, simplistic drums, and subtle electric guitar make up the meat of the ambiance as the vocalist delivers an evocative message. Venus in Arms seamlessly combines great songwriting with a solid, integral sound to bring us something truly magical.
A devilishly low-pitched, buzzing synth bass paired with a steady drum groove form the intro. “Fantasy / You got me at fantasy / Starry Eyed / And looking like a midnight dream,” the singer croons, letting the sultry lyrics pour from her with elegance. Harmonies gracefully drape themselves over her lead line, then usher us into another verse. The phrasing of each verse unfolds as follows: a few repeated chords, then a few new ones at the cadence. It’s classic. It’s gratifying. It’s effective.
Eventually, we do end up in the chorus. The textures thicken and the energy swells, underpinning the copiously repeated hook. There’s this built-in, natural catchiness to this section—a feat only the most talented songwriters can achieve. As it melts away, the anthemic melody sticks around in your head.
Be sure to give Venus In Arms a listen and a follow on your choice of streaming service or social media platform! You’ll be happy to have a new dreamy indie artist to obsess over! Plus, “Fantasy” is a perfect addition to any summer playlist.

“Fantasy” by Venus In Arms - Exclusive track premiere of ‘Fantasy’ by Venus In Arms, a solo project by Olivia (Breakdown Valentine/Moon Museum).
“This song has been two years in the making. The foundation of the song wrote itself pretty quickly–the guitars, melody, lyrics all came together in one night. But this song didn’t seem like one that was ready to go after the first round. I let it sit for a while and layered on parts over time. I love songs that are cinematic or have a character and layers of emotions. I wanted to try and create something that was in that vein. I actually sang a lyric in Korean in the second verse. Coming into my own and accepting myself fully is something I started working on in the last few years and I’m proud of my multi-ethnic background. I went to mix the song with Beau and working with him enhanced the vision I had for the song. He has some amazing analog gear and brought the song a warmth I couldn’t create in my home studio. The meaning of this song morphs as often as the characters in the music video and so I can’t say it means one thing for me. It definitely stemmed from a particular feeling, but I really want the listener to be able to define what this song means for themselves.”
While toying with the idea of releasing solo music, she joined Moon Museum, a San Francisco band made up of close friends and tenured musicians. The group recorded and released 3 tracks through the covid pandemic and are still writing to this day. Today Olivia is finally stretching her wings and releasing music created solely by herself. Most of the material from Venus In Arms is about her continued self-discovery and expression, and is self written, recorded, and produced. However, she’s not limiting the experience to writing and producing on her own and you’ll surely see some guest producers and writers in the near future.

GET PRETTY, WE'RE GOING OUT. "FANTASY" BY VENUS IN ARMS WILL BE ARRIVING SOON!!!
With the final touches being placed on the music video for "Fantasy" by Venus In Arms, we patiently await its official debut. Following Venus In Arms aka Olivia on social media has told me that her new music video will have a "mini movie" feel to it. Exciting!
I've been privileged to an early listen, and I can tell you the song has a ballad feel. The bassline propels the track like an outboard engine pushes a skiff. The minimalist approach to the single allows the open guitar chords to truly resonate and the synth notes to land on open terrain. Olivia's vocals are the focus, but the lyrics are what it's all about. When Olivia sings the chorus line "you're just a fantasy", the emotional weight tips the scale over like a triple beam being maxed out in middle school science class. Reality hits the heart, I'm alone and you're just a fantasy. Riveting indeed.
